Repair Solution & Estimate (Return to Index)

Explanations of repairs and cost estimates

Defect: Wood deck, improperly nailed joist hangers

The joist hangers are designed to be attached to the ledger board with nails.  The joists are then placed into the joist hangers and nails are installed through the joist hangers into the deck joists.  The joist hanger is designed with holes  on each plane and all should be used to attach it to the ledger and the joist.

Performing the Repair

  1. Drive galvanized nails into all holes in the joist hanger, both into the ledger board and the joist.

Note: Performing the work may be difficult due to the fact that the joist hangers are already in place.  Swinging a hammer may be more difficult than if the joist hangers were initially installed properly.

Approximate Cost for Repair

  • $10-$15 per joist hanger, depending on the number of nails required and the difficulty in reaching each of the joist hangers.
