Chinese Drywall Firm Ordered to Pay $2.6 Million
A New Orleans judge ruled against a Chinese Drywall manufacturer last week, ordering them to pay $2.6 Million in damages to seven Virginian families. We don't know whether they will actually pay (or be compelled to pay) the money, but it's definitely a step in the right direction because it now sets a precedent for dozens of pending cases.

Remediating Homes with Defective Drywall
The Building Envelope Science Institute (BESI) endorsed a remediation protocol back in October 2009 that more than exceeds the recommendations by the CPSC & HUD interim remediation guidance.
It's good to know that the protocols endorsed by the institute does not require additional changes to meet the latest CPSC/HUD interim guidance or to be aligned with the court's (MDL No. 2047) ruling. The institute has a document that helps explain the remediation protocol called, "The BESI System: Understanding the Protocols for Defective Drywall" which is posted on the intitute's homepage.
In fact, the institute has been certifying qualified candidates for inspection and remediation of structures with defective drywall since last year. The institute has a national directory for those looking for those qualified to perform an inspection or remediation.
Those that have earned a designation as a remediator or consultant through the institute have attended a two-day course with a written final exam; inspectors attend a one-day course with a written final exam. There are prerequisites they have to meet, which includes being in good standing with the state if they are licensed (required for those performing remediation).
More information about the protocols and requirements can be found at www.BESInstitute.org.
