Heating Units x 2! Double The Responsibility!

It's not uncommon to find homes with two furnaces; one in the basement and one in the attic. While the basement furnace is easily accessed, the attic system may be more difficult, and subsequently, not as well maintained.

Attic Furnace

Furnace filters for both locations should be examined, at a minimum, every 30-60 days, as well as replaced every 3-6 months during those times when the appliances are being operated. This rule also applies during that time the a/c components are being used if part of the same ducting system, using the same blower.

Attic furnace air filters are most generally located at the ceiling return air register, but can be found at the heating/cooling system itself, similar to the basement configuration.

Furnace Filter

Installation safety standards have evolved over the years in an effort to make access convenient as well as safe. Here are some highlights:

  • A light is to be installed near the unit. The switch is to be installed at the attic access point.
  • Decking must be installed from the attic access to the furnace. This platform must be at least 2 feet wide. Always use caution and know where you're stepping!
  • A working platform, 30" square, must also be installed on the service side of the unit.
  • Access to the unit must not be more than 20 feet deep.
  • Installing a well drained catch-pan is highly recommended.
  • A whole house fan should not be installed in an attic with a forced air furnace and central split a/c system. (At least, never used at the same time.)

And, as always, use extreme caution when ascending/descending your ladder. Stay focused and remember the 3-point rule!
