How to Clear a Clogged Garbage Disposal
We tell each of our clients that we are available to answer their questions for as long as they own their home--and we mean it! A client recently asked about how she could clear a clogged garbage disposal in her new home. It's a great question and here's the answer! Below please also find an instructional video from ehow.com. It helps show the quick process very nicely.
- Check/Restore Power. Turn the disposal on and off quickly to see if it hums. If it hums you have power and you just need to clear the clog/jam . If it doesn't hum (no power), the unit may have tripped the reset button underneath the disposal or a breaker at the electrical panel. Look first for a red reset button on the bottom of the unit to reset, or if it doesn't have a button, reset the disposal by flipping the breaker.
- Manually Dislodge the Clog from the Bottom. Insert an Allen key at the bottom of the unit and turn it back and forth (this moves the motor back and forth manually). Do this until it turns freely.
- Dislodge the Clog from the Top. Using the end of a broom handle move the impeller back and forth firmly until you feel the blockage break free.
- Remove the Debris. Turn off the disposal by switching the breaker off. Then using some needle nose pliers, carefully remove the debris that you dislodged.
- Run Disposal to Remove All Remaining Debris. Restore power to the unit, run cold water, and then run the disposal to clear all the rest of the debris.
