It's Here: The Beginning of Winter 2011-2012
The pace of life has temporarily quickened for most here in Colorado this month. Just recently, forecasters are warned of another major snowstorm bringing anywhere from 6-12 inches of snow below 9,000 feet elevation, and as much as 30 inches in the northern part of the state above 10,000 feet.
Knowing this is the time of the year when we start hearing the snow total predictions of advancing storms, I wanted to share this generic task list I mentally prepared for myself in advance of the coming winter. Things I knew would be easier done when warm and dry. You might see something here you've forgotten. Also, feel free to write and let us know tasks on your checklist that I may have missed.
- Blowing out automatic sprinkler system.
- Aerating and fertilizing lawn in preparation for next summer.
- Disconnecting and draining water hoses.
- Bring in potted plants.
- Remove and store lawn furniture cushions in dry environment.
- Clean gutters and rake up leaves.
- Walk roof and review shingles, vents, vent pipes, and flashing.
- Review, reposition or install attic insulation.
- Check doors and windows for undamaged weatherstripping.
- Tune Up snowblower. Buy fresh gas and Stabil.
And wouldn't you know it. As I'm finishing this, the first raindrops are appearing on my skylight overhead. Soon to be followed by snow. Welcome Winter 2011-2012!
