Lighting Your Gas Fireplace
It's about time. Those warm days of summer are disappearing fast in most areas of the country.
Take a moment to review these steps to successfully and safely re-light that beautiful, but potentially dangerous appliance:
- Open the access door to your fireplace; usually below or to the side of the firebox.
- Ensure the main gas appliance valve is ON. (Parallel to the gas line.)
- Turn your thermostat to its lowest setting.
- Turn the main control knob to the OFF position.
- Smell for gas.
- Visually inspect the stove for damage or any sign of deterioration. Do not operate the stove if anything looks suspicious.
- Locate and observe the pilot assembly. When lit, it will produce a small, but steady and visual flame.
- Now turn the main gas control knob to the PILOT position, push in and hold down.
- With the other hand, immediately push in or click the ignitor button 2 or 3 times until the pilot is lit.
- Once pilot is fired off, continue to hold in the pilot control knob for 1 minute.
- Release the pilot knob and the pilot assembly should remain lit.
- Turn the gas control knob to the ON.
- Adjust thermostat to desired setting.
- Close access door and enjoy!
Remember, if anything in this process does not proceed smoothly, you may have an issue that needs professional attention. Do not hesitate to contact a licensed or certified technician.
We always recommend to our clients to have gas appliances serviced annually. This will not only keep your appliance in top shape mechanically, but will greatly lessen any chance of malfunction.
