Preventative Maintenance Tip of the Week: Air-Conditioning System Annual Maintenance

If you haven't already used your air conditioning this year, you are probably planning on it in the coming months. The beginning of the cooling season is definitely upon us, so this is the time for your annual air conditioning system maintenance. Check out other Spring Maintenance Tasks here.

In just two steps, here's what to do:

  • Clean & Clear Debris. The exterior compressor/condenser units should be kept clean and free of all leaves and debris; they should never be covered or otherwise boxed-in, and shrubs and hedges should be cut back.*
  • Have the System Serviced. Air conditioning systems should be serviced every year at the beginning of the cooling season (which is right now).So call today to have your system serviced.

*Why? All of the items mentioned in point number one restrict the free flow of air, which reduces the gas-to-liquid process and overall efficiency of the system. In extreme cases, this may cause damage to the compressor. Plus, clearing around the system will also ensure that your service professional can easily access the system equipment as necessary.

Electrical Breaker

Also, don't forget to ensure the disconnect box at the wall next to the condensor is in the ON position, and the breaker is ON at the Main Electrical Panel.  Once power has been supplied to the entire system, wait for at least one hour before turning air conditioner on.  This will allow the system to energize properly before requesting service.
