Scrapbook - Garbage Disposal Problem? I Think I Nailed It!
This is sure to throw a monkey wrench in the works! But I suppose a nail is better than an actual monkey wrench! This nail has apparently gone through the garbage disposal (in more ways than one!). OK, who was eating nails for dinner again? Actually this occurrence is not uncommon! If you don't believe me, Google "nail in garbage disposal." So if you are prone to accidents like this while working near the sink, it's a great idea to purchase a garbage disposal cover or stopper (less than a $10 investment).
What to do if this happens to you? Well, first, don't run the disposal. Then, TURN OFF THE POWER! Turn off the power either by unplugging the disposal, or, if hardwired, turning off the appropriate circuit breaker. Then, look just above the motor of your unit and there should be 3 or 4 small bolts or screws that hold the main motor onto the waste chute. Remove these bolts to separate the motor and you should be able to remove the nail. Again, please, please make sure the power is cut off.
