Tip of the Week: Seal Windows After Magnetic Alarms Are Installed

Tip of the Week: Seal windows after magnetic alarms are installed. If you have an alarm system put in your home and alarm magnets are installed in the bottom of your window frame(s) at the sill and a hole is drilled in the frame (not really the ideal installation), be sure to seal or caulk around the magnet. Ordinarily, you might not think to do this, but rain water can penetrate and get by the magnet and the window sill (wood) will absorb the moisture and damage the sill inside the wall. The exterior window sill will start to swell and show a type of water damage. Avoid the whole issue by simply sealing around any magnets installed. Incidentally, no caulking is necessary if magnets are installed at the interior, which would be the preferred installation.
