Where I do inspections, I have the great joy of going into a lot of crawl spaces. People think I'm joking when I say that I "save the best for last" but I really do like the crawls. I have only been stuck six or seven times, but I have gotten out okay.

Vinyl Siding and High Heat

First of all, I hear people say that "vinyl siding is a great maintenance-free siding". There really is no such thing. If you have to so much as just hose it down once in a while, it's not maintenance free. That being said, one of the more intriguing issues I have come up against when looking at a home with vinyl siding is heat damage. Sometimes it's as simple as seeing the gas or charcoal grill sitting up against the house and just knowing what the damaged is caused by. But lately, I have been seeing more and more strange situations.

As somewhat anticipated, related to my recent post on FPE panels, I received a call from a Master Electrician, 35 years in the trade who informed me I was wrong to call for replacement of the FPE sub-panel with Stab-Lok breakers.

What A Home Inspection Is Not

During every home inspection I begin by covering with my client the scope of the inspection. It’s very common to run into misconceptions about the purpose of the home inspection.

But it is also important to understand what a home inspection is not. Generally speaking, the home inspection is general in nature. That’s why it’s referred to as a General Home Inspection.

To answer this question, one must first ask, “What is a home inspection”?  Simply stated, a home inspection is an objective examination of the overall condition of the visible and accessible components of a home.
