What's Wrong with this Picture: Junction Dysfunction

Junction box? Who needs a box when you have electrical tape!?! This is what’s commonly referred to in electrical circles as a “rats nest”. There are a couple of problems with this, besides being unsafe and against accepted building codes.

ANSWER: Wires improperly bolted to deck

This electrical lateral is bolted to the second-level deck on this home, which is a major life/safety hazard for the people living there. The contact with the wood can also lead to premature deterioration of the wire sheathing, which can cause fires. All laterals and drops should have at least 10 feet of clearance from grade, and at least 15 feet of clearance from the ground.

ANSWER: Disconnected furnace vent

It doesn’t take an expert to figure this one out. This furnace vent is obviously disconnected, which allows the discharge to vent directly into the attic space of this house. This can lead to unhealthy air quality for occupants in the house. The vent should be properly connected by an HVAC specialist.
