Gingerbread house contest

A house made of gingerbread? Well that's certainly a unique property! In this blog series we usually feature the world's most interesting and unique homes, but in light of the holiday season, these confectionery versions of home SWEET home caught our attention. These culinary masterpieces were part of "This Old House" magazine's recent gingerbread house contest - an annual event where contestants send in pictures of their works of art to win the title of Gingerbread House Contest Winner. Shown below is the winner of this year's contest.

The entry was a gingerbread village custom made by the families of the Girl Scout Troop 1745. The group includes 6- and 7-year-old Brownies. Submitted by, "Olivia O" and her daughter Olivia, a closeup of one building below utilized Corn Pops and Lucky Charms cereals for the walls, watermelon seeds for the tower roof, and spaghetti for the window trim.

Rather than bricks and mortar, contestants of the “This Old House” 2011 Gingerbread Contest created different textures with all kinds of components such as: gum, fruit roll ups, marshmallows, graham crackers, and Rice Krispie Treats. Out of the 38 entries, our favorite includes a gingerbread replica of the house from the movie “Up.” It was the first runner-up!

Contestants really got creative with the gingerbread and went beyond the normal cottage or house we are accustomed to seeing. Additional categories included: houses built by kids, towns, churches, cathedrals, fancy houses, and some more unique creations - from a Model-T Ford, to a gingerbread nutcracker, and even a grandfather clock; all each unique in their own special way.
