What Wrong with this Picture: Really Dirty Furnace Filter

Gutter Plant

ANSWER: Very dirty furnace filter

It may be time for a little spring cleaning. The filter on this furnace it extremely dirty. Filters in HVAC units, including heat pumps, AC units, furnaces, window units, as well as larger units, are used to keep indoor air cleaner and HVAC units operating more efficiently. Keeping a clean filter in your unit can also extend the life of the unit, as it will not be working as hard. The more dirt and dust the filter collects from the air, the less dirt and dust pass through the unit and back into the indoor area. Filters should be checked every 30 days and changed every 3 months maximum to keep your unit operating at maximum efficiency.

Boy, I hope my husband knows

Submitted by Tami Putnam (not verified) on Fri, 03/11/2011 - 6:11pm.

Boy, I hope my husband knows about all of this and checks it. I know I sure don't I feel like every article that I read on this site tells me that I need to be aware of one more thing in my home. I think it's great, I just worry about what else I'm missing. I'm sure we've already had it checked recently, but I'm still making my husband check our hvac when he gets home from work!

Furnace Filters

It is because no one told them to. It's just like changing vehicle engine oil. Some people just don't do it. Two weeks ago I saw 4 one inch thick filters installed in an opening for a four inch HEPA filter. I am amazed every day.

It is crazy to me to think

It is crazy to me to think that people don't change their furnace filter on a regular basis. I know sometimes that they seem costly, but it is much cheaper than damaging your furnace. You also need to make sure you get the correct size. I've seen people double up on furnace filters and that is bad too.

Very dirty filter, black in just 2 weeks

Submitted by Alex von g (not verified) on Fri, 12/31/2010 - 11:58pm.

Anyone know?

We have a second floor heat pump in the attic, carrier brand with a slightly oversized blower because our upstairs in 64 feet long with 1600 square feet. In the past 6 months out filters have been turning black with whatever in just 2-3 weeks whereas they used to last 4-5 weeks... I went to the attic and checked all of the connections and all seem fine, I have always been good about changing the filter every 4 weeks religiously, I spoke with HVAC people and I am stumped. I am a handyman with my own business and frustrated... Our house is 18 years old and heat pump about 3-4 years old now. Ducts were cleaned10 years ago and aren't too bad... We did have our roof replaced this Summer but nothing done in the attic... I, as you see, take care of things sooner than later...

If you have some suggestions please send them my way.

Take a photo of it when you replace it. Then we can compare dirt!

I think our filter is as dirty as that

My husband and I live with his parents and we don't really help with the house maintenance like changing filters. But I've lived in this house for almost a year now, and I don't notice them changing their furnace filter. I should ask them that when they arrive from work. We may be surprised to see our filter as dirty as the one in the picture.

OMG I remember

I remember cleaning furnace filters when I was working in a summer camp... Man that was an experience!

importance of furnace filters

You describe your filter as "a large 6 month filter." It sounds like you have a four inch thick High Efficiency Particulate Air filter, more commonly called a HEPA filter. A HEPA filter is an excellent filter, much better than the one inch thick monthly filters that you are familiar with. I have a HEPA filter on my furnace and it is designed to be replaced yearly. My opinion is that these filters are the best ones available for the money. Anything better would require electric power, and who needs another electrical appliance? If your filter says to replace it every six months, then do so. If it says nothing at all, go the manufacturer's website and look it up. Most of the ones that I see are yearly replacement designs. Thanks for bringing it up, I must change mine today.

importance of furnace filters

Dirty furnace filters make a huge difference in air quality as well as efficiency of a furnace. One question that I have is in regards to the furnaces that have filters that are only supposed to be replaced every 6 months or so. I usually like to replace every month, but our new home has a large, 6 month filter. Anyone have any experience with this?  thanks!

Your condition does not appear to be normal. Maybe the ducts are full of dirt. Have them checked for dirt. Maybe dirt is being introduced into the system from an exterior source.

What if you are changing yours monthly and they are very dirty and then you change up to every 3 weeks and they are still dirty?  I have a gas furnace and I am shocked how dirty my filters are.

People don't realize

Submitted by Furnace Filter Guy (not verified) on Sun, 01/10/2010 - 8:08am.
Unfortunately furnace filters are neglected more often than not in most homes. People just don't realize the significance of changing furnace filters and air conditioner filters on a regular basis. I have seen filters left in systems so long that they get sucked out of the filter rack because they are so dirty that air cannot pass through them. This has a huge impact on equipment efficiency.
