What's Wrong with this Picture: Range Anti-Tip Device

ANSWER: Range does not have properly installed anti-tip device.

Funny thing about anti-tipping devices, simply having one doesn't quite do the trick. In this photo taken during a home inspection by U.S. Inspect North Carolina Inspector, Paul Tooley, you can see the homeowner's anti-tipping device safety stowed in the oven drawer. This occurrence is, unfortunately, extremely common and our inspectors see it all the time. The good news is it's extremely easy to remedy.

What is an anti-tipping device? Well, it's just what it sounds like. The device, when installed properly, keeps the range from tipping forward and spilling hot items if, for example, a toddler were to sit on the open oven door. Check your oven today (and your oven drawer). If you have a device that is not installed, install it. If you don't have one, request it from the manufacturer.

New Information

I'm very glad that we could provide this information that you did not know previously. If you have children, it can make your heart jump just watching the video I provided above. Anyway, since 1991, after “voluntary safety standards” were developed by UL (Underwriter Laboratories) and ANSI (American National Standards Institute), gas and electric stove installers are required to install anti-tip brackets provided by the manufacturer. Also, kitchen stove must remain stable when 250 pounds of pressure is applied to the open oven door for five minutes. But once the installer is long gone, it's pretty much our responsibility to make sure the device is there to keep our family safe. You can contact your installer if you find that it was not installed as it should have been and want them to come back and install it (A retail store like Sears is required to install the device as per the manufacturers instructions), or you can request an anti-tip bracket from the manufacturer if you don't have one.

Well i never knew ovens had those devices. We installed them on our bookshelves because they are so high. Is there any regualtions on them or is it owner responsibility.   Angela
