Advisory Report

March 2000

Read All About It: Home Interiors, Garages, and More!
Everything you ever wanted to know about home interiors and garages is just one click away--new technical information has been added to the House Facts section of the U.S. Inspect Web site.

In the home inspection industry, the interior of a home refers to the finished surfaces of walls, ceilings and floors, as well as components such as doors, windows and stairs.  Did you know that many glass manufacturers place a coating over glass windows for greater energy efficiency.  The coating, called low E (emissivity), reflects radiant heat in the summer and retains interior heat in the winter.  Learn more about the interior of your home.

Whether used to store your car or holiday decorations, the garage is a valuable addition to the home.  Is there at least a 5/8-inch gypsum board separating your attached garage from the living space?  This wall is required in order to serve as a firewall to the residence, and can prevent toxic gases or vapors from entering the residence.  Learn more about garages and other garage requirements.

U.S. Inspect's House Facts papers incorporate digital pictures and graphics to complement the technical information presented.  Keep an eye out for future issues of the Advisory Report, which will highlight new information that has been added to U.S. Inspect's online technical library.
