Tip of the Month: 5 Steps to Crisper, Cleaner, and Cooler Air In Your Home

Spring is about to give way to summer and around the country temperatures are starting to soar (and in some cases downright sizzle!) Here are some easy tips for keeping the air in your home crisp, clean, and cool when the weather starts to heat up:

  1. Keep excess heat from your home by drawing the curtains and blinds on south and west-facing windows that get direct sunlight during the day.
  2. Utilize ceiling fans to make higher temperatures much more comfortable. You'll be able to set your thermostat higher (to 78 degrees-82 degrees, which will help save money too!)
  3. Clean your A/C air filter at least once a month during the cooling season. Even normal dust accumulation will reduce air flow from week to week and negatively impact the efficiency of your system.
  4. Consider adding a HEPA filter to your vent registers to help control dust, dirt, smoke, dust mites, mold spores, pet dander and pollen in the air in your home.
  5. Bigger is not better when it comes to A/C. Several studies have found that many central air conditioning systems are over-sized by 50 percent or more. Your system must be sized properly to efficiently and effectively cool your home, so if you are having issues like short-cycling (system coming on and off too often), freezing coils, or other issues, be sure to call a technician to assess the system. Among other things, your system could be over sized!
